Call Break is a 4-player each-for-themselves trick-taking game: 13 cards from a 52-card deck, a mandatory call of 5–8 tricks every deal, and 13 tricks played with spades as permanent trump. Making your call scores call × 10 (+1 per overtrick); falling short costs call × 10. The first player to 300 cumulative points wins the match.
Play now — it's freeCall Break uses the complete deck: all 52 cards, ranks 2 through Ace in all four suits — nothing is removed. Each of the four players is dealt 13 cards.
Every player plays for themselves — there are no partnerships. Each player's call and tricks are counted individually.
After the deal, starting with the player after the dealer and going around once, each player makes exactly one call:
| Call | Meaning | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 5, 6, 7 or 8 | The number of tricks they undertake to win | Calling is mandatory — there is no pass |
Once all four calls are in, play begins — fulfilling the call is each player's own responsibility.
There is no trump suit to choose in Call Break — spades (♠) are permanent trumps. Any spade beats any card of another suit, and between two spades the higher rank wins.
The player after the dealer leads the first trick; the winner of each trick leads the next.
Cards carry no point values — only the number of tricks taken matters. Within every suit the order is natural:
| Rank | Card |
|---|---|
| Highest | Ace (A) |
| King (K) | |
| Queen (Q) | |
| Jack (J) | |
| 10 down to 3 | |
| Lowest | 2 |
The opening lead may be any card. Every other player must follow the led suit if holding one.
A player void in the led suit must play a spade if holding one — and if the trick already contains a spade, must play a spade high enough to beat it if able (wasting a lower spade is not allowed then).
If no spade in hand can beat the best spade already played, the player may waste a spade or discard any other suit. With no spades at all, any card may be discarded.
The trick is won by the highest spade — or, if no spade was played, by the highest card of the led suit. After 13 tricks the deal is scored.
At the end of the deal each player's tricks are compared with their own call:
| Outcome | Points |
|---|---|
| Call made (tricks ≥ call) | call × 10 |
| Each overtrick | +1 |
| Call missed (tricks < call) | − call × 10 |
Deal points accumulate until a player reaches 300 and wins the match. The dealer button rotates to the next player after every deal.
Don't overcall: every promise beyond your hand's strength costs call × 10.
Count spades from the start — knowing how many are out tells you when to play your big ones.
Use small spades to ruff side-suit tricks instead of hoping they win on their own.
Once your call is safe, stop taking risks — overtricks add just +1 each, but a thrown-away high card can set an opponent up.
All 52 — ranks 2 through Ace in the four suits, with 13 cards dealt to each player.
Four. Each player plays for themselves; there are no teams or partnerships.
Each player calls 5, 6, 7 or 8 tricks, once per deal. Calling is mandatory — there is no pass.
Spades (♠) are always trump — nobody chooses a trump suit in Call Break.
You must play a spade if you have one, and if the trick already holds a spade you must beat it with a higher spade when able. Otherwise you may discard any card.
Call × 10 — a made call of 5 scores 50. Each overtrick adds +1; a missed call costs call × 10 (e.g. −60 for a missed call of 6).
When a player's cumulative score reaches 300 — the highest total at that point wins the match.
